UN gives green light for EU in Kosovo

The UN Security Council is giving a green light to the deployment of a European Union police and judicial mission throughout Kosovo under the UN flag. Serbia and Kosovo both agreed - reluctantly - to cooperate with the new EU mission. The EU mission was to deploy soon after Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on Feb. 17, but was stalled in part because of objections from Serbia. A statement approved by all 15 Security Council members late Wednesday welcomes the intentions of Belgrade and Pristina "to cooperate with the international community." It also welcomes the EU's continuing efforts "to advance the European perspective of the whole of the western Balkans."
