Vatican rebukes Italy speaker for fascist comments

The Vatican on Wednesday rebuked an Italian politician for saying the Catholic Church failed to resist fascist-era laws restricting the rights of Jews. The Vatican newspaper said Gianfranco Fini, the speaker of Italy's lower Chamber of Deputies, demonstrated "petty political opportunism" and historical revisionism. Fini spoke Tuesday at a conference marking the 60th anniversary of the introduction of the so-called racial laws, which restricted the rights of Jews and expelled them from government, universities and other fields.
