A man has been stoned to death in northern Iran for adultery.
Judiciary spokesman Ali Reza Jamshidi says the execution was carried out in the city of Rasht, on the Caspian Sea, in March. He did not identify the man but said the woman involved in the case "repented" and was spared stoning.
He did not provide further details.
Stonings were widely carried out in the early years after the 1979 Islamic Revolution that toppled the pro-Western government and brought hard-line clerics to power. But in recent years, it has seldom been applied. The government rarely confirms when it carries out stoning sentences.
Women's rights activists headed by lawyer Shadi Sadr have been campaigning to have the sentence removed from Iran's statutes.
