Genesis Prize laureate announces challenge grant on behalf of aid group
The $100,000 gift will be matched dollar for dollar by HIAS for donations made during Passover.

Renowned artist and sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor and the Genesis Prize Foundation have announced a $100,000 challenge grant to benefit HIAS, the global Jewish nonprofit organization that provides humanitarian aid and assistance to refugees.The $100,000 gift will be matched dollar for dollar by HIAS for donations made during Passover. The money will be used to help foster interfaith relations in communities across America to advocate in support of immigrants and refugees.Kapoor, who is the fourth winner of the Genesis Prize, has dedicated himself to alleviating the suffering of refugees around the world and has worked closely with the prize committee to direct his award money toward that cause.“The current refugee crisis is one of the greatest humanitarian disasters of our time,” said Stan Polovets, co-founder and chairman of the Genesis Prize Foundation, of the recent gift. “Given its track record of providing support to and advocating on behalf of refugees, HIAS is well positioned to improve the lives of tens of thousands of individuals seeking a new destiny, free of turmoil and uncertainty. We are proud to support such a critical mission.”HIAS president and CEO Mark Hetfield said, “HIAS is proud to have the Genesis Prize Foundation and sculptor and activist Anish Kapoor as partners in advancing HIAS’s mission, to ensure that refugees can find welcome, safety and freedom. In January, GPF and Kapoor announced grants to five prominent NGOs, including HIAS, totaling $1 million.
