The winner of Best Production at the 28th International Haifa Children’s Theater Festival was The Plasticine Prince by David Bilenka, based on the book by Dutch author Harm de Jonghe. During the perilous days of World War II, Roger, a Christian boy from the “safe” side of town, and Jesse, a Jewish girl from the ghetto, become friends. Jesse, dressed as a boy for survival, and Roger invent an imaginary kingdom called Plasticine of which Jesse is the prince and Roger her faithful knight. The judges, among the rest, said it was “A brave, honest and uncompromising production... that mesmerized the children.”Prince also won Best Play, Best Live Music by Assaf Roth and Best Actress for Omer Yitzhaki. The prize is NIS 10,000. The NIS 2,000 first prize for street theater went to Trash, the story of a bag who wants to be a star, a joint production from Spain and Mexico.Other winners included Best Director Gama Frid and Best Actor Roy Saar for Kaytek the Boy Wizard, based on the book by Janusz Korczak.Some 60,000 people attended the three-day festival, which has become a Passover staple over the years. Also, this year the panel of judges for street theater included guests from Spain, part of a move toward inter-festival cooperation.
