The Technion – Israel Institute of Technology is ranked No. 69 among the world’s leading universities, up from No.

77 in 2015, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities released on Monday.

The ARWU is considered one of the most objective and important ranking of the world’s leading universities.

Since 2003, the annual report, conducted by researchers at the Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China, publishes the world’s top 500 universities from more than 1,200 ranked.

The Technion surpasses the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which dropped 20 points from the previous year to 87th place this year, becoming the leading Israeli institution on the list.

The Weizmann Institute of Science ranked in the top 101-150, while Tel Aviv University ranked in the top 151- 200 universities in the world.

Ben Gurion University of the Negev ranked in the top 401- 500. Bar-Ilan University and the University of Haifa did not make it into the list.

“The Shanghai index, the leading ranking in the world, continues to flatter the Technion,” Prof. Peretz Lavie, the Technion’s president, said on Monday.

“We are especially pleased at the recognition of the Technion’s place at the top of the world’s institutions in the fields of engineering and specifically in the field of electrical engineering and electronics,” he said. “The faculty, researchers and our excellent employees will continue to train and nurture the students at the Technion – Israel’s future generation.”

Lavie added that the latest rankings brings the university closer to its vision of standing as one of the top ten scientific research institutions in the world.

The ARWU top ranked universities in the world were once again dominated by US and UK institutions. Harvard University secured its first place ranking for the 14th year in a row, with Stanford University ranking second. The University of California-Berkley and Cambridge University followed in the 3rd and 4th slots, respectively.

This year nine universities broke into the top 100 list; among them: Tsinghua University, Peking University, Monash University, National University of Singapore, Mayo Medical School and the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. This year also marks the first time China and Singapore have universities ranked among the top 100.
