The "UP" plane, flown as an El Al subsidiary, was on its way to Kiev, Ukraine, when the incident occurred.
Emergency crews gathered on the tarmac at Tel Aviv's major international airport, with the plane expected to land before midnight having first dumped its fuel at sea.
