An Arab motorist was shot and killed in east Jerusalem on Tuesday after trying to run over three Border Police officers overseeing the demolition of the home of a terrorist who carried out a lethal bulldozer attack in the city last year, police said.
The three officers, who were manning a checkpoint in the capital's Sur Bahir neighborhood, jumped out of the way and were lightly wounded in the attack, Jerusalem Police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said.
The assailant, Iyad Awisat, 20, was shot dead by security personnel stationed on a rooftop nearby, Ben-Ruby said. Awisat was a resident of the nearby Arab neighborhood of Jebl Mukaber.
The driver was not affiliated with any terrorist organization, police said.
The three Border Police officers were taken to Jerusalem's Shaare Zedek Hospital.
Jerusalem Police chief Cmdr. Aharon Franco said officers had responded properly to the attack, which he said was terror-related.
Later, several dozen teens pelted police with rocks and empty bottles when the body of the attacker was removed from the scene, police said. They were dispersed with stun grenades.
The neighborhood is located on the southeastern rim of the city, next to Kibbutz Ramat Rahel.
Three people were killed and dozens were wounded in the July bulldozer attack on Jaffa Road, the first of a series of bulldozer attacks in the capital. The attacker, Hussam Dwayat, 30, was shot dead by security personnel.
The demolition of Dwayat's home, which had been delayed by legal appeals, was approved by the High Court of Justice.
Security personnel demolished only the part of the split-level building, sealing the area off from the rest of the house.
Israel routinely demolishes the homes of terrorists as a deterrent against future attacks.
