Drug smuggling ring uncovered by police, 1.5 tons of cocaine seized

A complex and sophisticated drug smuggling ring that operates on an international level has been uncovered in northern Israel, police said Tuesday. Israel Police, in cooperation with Peruvian police seized a total of 1.5 tons of cocaine, worth an estimated NIS 2 billion.. Four people have been arrested in connection with the ring including two in Peru; a 51-year-old man from Kiryat Yam and a 54-year-old man. The alleged modus operandi of the ring included hiding the drugs in industrial cars packed in shipping containers. Destinations included Europe, the Middle East. Three shipping containers have been seized so far. Eight more suspects have been taken in for interrogation, two of which have been arrested and their remand extended by the Haifa Magistrate's court on Tuesday morning. Another suspect who lives abroad is wanted for questioning in Israel. The bust is considered the biggest in Israel and one of the most significant in the world.
