Italy's president gets honorary HU doctorate, expresses support for Israel

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano expressed strong support for Israel as he received an honorary doctor of philosophy degree from Hebrew University on Thursday. Napolitano cited the "extraordinary rebirth of the Jewish nation" and said that he had come to Israel "to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its existence." He condemned those who spread anti-Israel and anti-Semitic ideas and expressed his full support for Israel and its struggle for peace and security. Napolitano, speaking at the Hebrew University's Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace, also called for a vigorous role by the European Union in assisting Israel and its neighbors to achieve peace.
