Israel Beiteinu chairman Avigdor Lieberman visited the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City on Monday, a known electioneering gesture among Israeli politicians, but one which took on special significance in light of harsh attacks Lieberman came under from the Shas party.
Asked why he chose to make the trip, the man slated to head the third largest party in the 18th Knesset according to polls published Saturday, replied in English "Jewish tradition."
The visit comes days after Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef warned that the wrath of God will be on all who vote for Israel Beiteinu.
When asked what his aspirations were, Lieberman, struggling to inch his way between the reporters, jokingly said "my aspiration is to reach the wall." He reiterated his political message: "With no loyalty there is no citizenship."
Shas was not impressed with Lieberman's gesture. "We suggest the note Lieberman stuffs in between the Western Wall's stones include a supplication to be forgiven for his sin of intending to open stores that sell pork meat and institutionalize civil marriage. This is a visit to a relic of the Holy Temple, not a tennis court. This visit is pathetic," sources in the party said.
"[Lieberman's] next attempt to hide his anti-religious and anti-Jewish agenda will probably include wearing a kippa or a black hat," Shas slammed the black-kippa clad Lieberman. "Lieberman made the Western Wall a photo-op for a poster," sources in Shas said.
