Mazuz rules PM can continue indirect negotiations with Syria

Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz ruled on Sunday that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert can continue negotiations with Syria despite calls by politicians last week to prevent him from doing so. Officials including MK Limor Livnat insisted that Olmert had no authority to make commitments on the state's behalf while leading a transitional government. Mazuz however responded by saying that a Supreme High Court ruling in 2001 regarding the authorities of a transitional government said that such an administration was not formally limited in its power to hold political negotiations.
