Peres: Assad erred in refusal to meet with Israeli leaders

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his deceased father, former president Hafez al-Assad erred in refusing to meet with Israeli leaders, Israel Radio reported President Shimon Peres as saying on Sunday. Peres, who was meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos, asked the official to raise the matter of kidnapped soldier Gilad Schalit and to act towards his release during his upcoming trip to Syria. Moratinos reportedly praised Turkey's role in indirect talks between Jerusalem and Damascus, expressing his belief that direct talks between the two were close.
