Damascus-based Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal recently escaped an assassination attempt after Arab countries passed information about his movements to the US and Israel, the pan-Arab daily A-Sharq al-Awsat reported Sunday, citing a senior Gaza Hamas official. Ahmed Youssef, adviser to Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, told the newspaper that senior Hamas members in Gaza didn't communicate by phone out of fear for their lives. Meanwhile, the Hamas newspaper Al-Rasala reported Sunday that Haniyeh recently received warnings from Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, as well as other sources, that Israel planned to assassinate him. Haniyeh is currently in hiding and avoiding giving speeches at the mosque near his home in the Ashati refugee camp, the report said.
