Hospital to study pollution and disease link

The Haifa area is known to have the highest rate of respiratory disease in Israel.

Haifa's Carmel Hospital plans to conduct a comprehensive study of the link between air pollution and children's illnesses in coming months, reports Yediot Haifa. The study will survey 1,200 children aged six to 12 in the Haifa region, checking their medical records and vital statistics against the type and amount of air pollution to which they have been exposed. According to the report, although the Haifa area is known to have the highest rate of respiratory disease in Israel, no comprehensive study has been done in the area since 1991. The study will measure the level and composition of the pollution in the air in various locations, as well as measuring the level of exposure of the children and the rates and types of illnesses among them.
