Israel Railways and the Haifa Municipality have finally reached an agreement on the building of an acoustic wall in the Bat Galim neighborhood, where the train runs just meters from residential buildings, reports Yediot Haifa. Work on the wall will now begin in about six months and will take about three months to complete, alleviating years of suffering by the residents.
According to the report, residents of the area have been living a nightmare for years, with the train running literally past their living room windows. Residents said Israel Railways allocated a budget for a sound-reducing wall back in 2004, but the municipality stubbornly insisted that it be transparent in order to preserve the "view."
Now the city has agreed to allow a solid wall to be built, in accordance with instructions by the Ministry for Environmental Protection. An Israel Railways spokesman said the wall would be faced with decorative stone tiles chosen by the city.
