Fancy a spot of political satire that promises to entertain, and in an unusual setting? If the answer is yes, then tomorrow evening get yourself down to Rehov Hanevi'im for a rooftop performance by award-winning American puppeteer Paul Zaloom.
New York-based Zaloom, 57, who runs the successful Bread and Puppet Theater, will put on a performance of his "The Mother of All Enemies" puppet show on the roof of Rehov Hanevi'im 54, following the opening act of Jerusalemite performance artist Moran Sanderowitz, which starts at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are NIS 20.
Zaloom, who has gained something of a reputation as an enfant terrible, has been active on the puppet scene for over 30 years, garnering several prestigious kudos, including an Obie (Off-Broadway Theater Award) in the process.
The name of the show, which uses the traditional Turkish shadow puppet technique, is a paraphrase of Saddam Hussein's declaration that he would unleash "the mother of all wars."
The show's main character is described as "an oddball, gay, secular Arab" who is hounded by the Syrian secret service, the Israeli Border Police, al-Qaida, the US Department of Homeland Security, the Statue of Liberty and a somewhat overly zealous member of the US immigration police.
