A 75-year-old Tel Aviv man has been sentenced to 15 months in jail after being convicted of causing the death of a motorcyclist in a traffic accident, reports www.local.co.il. The Tel Aviv district court sentenced the man to jail and cancelled his driver's license permanently after hearing that he had made an illegal turn that resulted in his commercial vehicle colliding with and killing the motorcyclist, who was aged in his 50s.
According to the report, the accident occurred in July 2007 at the busy intersection of Ha'ta'aruha and Dizengoff streets in Tel Aviv when the man turned left illegally, bringing him across the flow of traffic. In court, prosecutors stressed the negligence of the driver, saying that he had committed several traffic offenses on that day, including driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to stop at a red light. Prosecutors said the punishment should include prison to reflect the gravity of the offenses, but defense lawyers asked for a non-jail punishment because of the driver's advanced age and poor health.
The judge sentenced the man to 15 months in jail to be followed by a three-year probation period, and prohibited him from obtaining a driver's license of any kind for the remainder of his life. He also ordered the man to pay NIS 15,000 in compensation to the widow and daughter of the motorcyclist.
