Tel Aviv residents spend more money than do residents of any other city in Israel, according to a new Central Bureau of Statistics survey of household expenditures. In Tel Aviv, residents spend an average of NIS 5,893 per person each month, compared with just NIS 2,197 per person in the lowest-spending city, Bnei Brak, reports www.local.co.il. According to the report, the bureau surveyed the 14 largest cities in Israel, five of them (Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, Rishon Lezion and Ashdod) with populations of more than 200,000 people, and the remainder with populations of 100,000 to 200,000 people. The survey, which covered household expenditures for 2007, found that Ramat Gan residents spent the most per household, with an average household expenditure of NIS 13,335 per month, but Tel Aviv residents spent the most per person, with NIS 5,893 per person each month. Bnei Brak residents also spent the least per household at NIS 8,604 per month. The report said the survey also found that Tel Aviv had both the highest property values and the highest rental prices of any city, and that Rishon Lezion had the highest rate of home ownership. Jerusalem and Bnei Brak had the most crowded homes, with an average of more than one person per room. The survey also found that Rehovot had the highest rate of Internet subscriptions, Ashkelon had the highest number of households with two or more mobile telephones, Holon had the highest number of televisions per household, and Ramat Gan had the highest number of homes with air conditioners.
