Abbas: Israeli operation in Gaza Strip `brutal aggression'

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday denounced Israel's ground offensive as "brutal aggression." These were his harshest words yet in describing Israel's nine-day assault on his Hamas rivals in Gaza. Abbas spoke after meeting with PLO leaders in the West Bank on Sunday. On Monday, he is heading to the United Nations headquarters in New York. Abbas said his offer to Hamas to start talks on sharing power still stands. Last week, Hamas ignored his invitation. Abbas said the situation has become unbearable and that "national unity is the most important thing to us."
