The British Broadcasting Corp. is quoting an army spokesman as saying that British troops have joined in the fighting in the southern Iraqi city of Basra. British army spokesman Maj. Tom Holloway has told the BBC that an artillery barrage has been fired into northern Basra in support of Iraqi forces fighting there. Holloway says the attack followed a request from Iraqi forces after they came under mortar fire from the area.
