A car bomb exploded Tuesday outside a Shi'ite shrine in southern Iraq, killing 53 people and injuring 105 others, police and witnesses said.
The blast occurred around 7:30 a.m. across the street from the gold-domed Kufa mosque, according to police Capt. Nafie Mohammed. The vehicle exploded on a corner where Shiite laborers gather every morning waiting for day jobs.
Kufa is a twin city of Najaf about 160 kilometers south of Baghdad, and the mosque is controlled by radical Shi'ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. The shrine marks the place where Imam Ali, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, was mortally wounded.
