Egyptian border guards arrest 6 African migrants trying to enter Israel
By JERUSALEM POST STAFF
An Egyptian security official says border guards have arrested six African migrants trying to cross illegally into Israel.
The official says five men and a woman from Nigeria and the Ivory Coast were caught Tuesday in an area in central Sinai about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of the main Egypt-Gaza crossing. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to talk to the media.
The official says the migrants allegedly paid US$500 (euro315) to human traffickers for shelter in the Egyptian desert and a ride to the Israeli border.
Guards shot at one of the migrants when he tried to escape, causing him to stumble and injure himself lightly, the official said. A hospital official says he was hospitalized with non-life-threatening wounds.
