Two leading international human rights groups urged Jordan on Monday to scrap proposed amendments to a law that would further restrict activities of non-governmental organizations in the kingdom.
The amendments would increase the government's control of NGOs working in Jordan and give authorities access to their finances without cause or judicial warrant, according to the Human Rights Watch and the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network.
The watchdogs said they sent a letter to Prime Minister Nader al-Dahabi warning that the amendments also curb the ability of the NGOs to function independently.
The New York-based HRW said the changes in the law also discriminate against non-Muslim religious organizations by restricting the activities they are allowed to engage in.
