Russia condemns US raid on Syria

Russia's Foreign Ministry has harshly criticized a US military raid in Syrian territory, warning it will escalate tensions in the region. Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko says Moscow is seriously concerned by what Syria's government says was an attack by four US military helicopters on Sunday near the Iraqi-Syrian border. US officials say the raid by special forces targeted the network of al-Qaida-linked foreign fighters moving through Syria into Iraq. The Syrian government says eight people were killed in the raid. Nesterenko said in a statement Monday that the war against terror must not be used as a cover for attacking sovereign nations. He says that such actions would undermine stability in the region. Russia has had close ties with Syria since the Soviet times.
