US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was in Baghdad Sunday morning for a surprise one-day visit to meet with the prime minister and discuss US-Iraqi relations, Iraq's government spokesman said.
Ali al-Dabbagh said Pelosi, a Democrat from California, would also meet with other Iraqi officials.
The US Embassy in Baghdad confirmed the trip and said Pelosi also would meet US officials and troops in Iraq.
Pelosi has been a top Democratic critic of the US-led war in Iraq. Her last visit to Iraq was in May 2008 when she met with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
