An American soldier has been killed in action northeast of Baghdad, the US military said Monday morning.
A US statement said the soldier died in Diyala province where insurgents remain active.
It was the first combat loss suffered by US forces in Iraq since March 16 when a US soldier was killed by a roadside bomb in Baghdad.
