Knesset to mark 40 years since Yom Kippur War

Past and present MKs who were connected to the war, such as Amram Mitzna and Avi Dichter, will speak to Knesset visitors.

The Knesset plans to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War on October 15th, following its summer recess, with a special session in which Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein, opposition leader Shelly Yacimovich and MKs Amram Mitzna (Hatnua) and Zehava Gal-On (Meretz) plan to speak.
In addition, the Knesset will host discussion groups of soldiers, students, veterans and orphans from the war with past and present MKs who were connected to the 1973 war.
Mitzna, who was an armored battalion commander in the Battle of the Chinese Farm, just east of the Suez Canal, and won the Chief Of Staff Citation, MK Omer Bar-Lev (Labor), a former General Staff Reconnaissance Unit (Sayeret Matkal) commando who fought on the Golan Heights and in Sinai in 1973, and MK Nachman Shai (Labor), who was the Israel Broadcasting Authority’s military reporter at the time, will speak to visitors.
In addition, former MKs Avi Dichter, who was a commander in Sayeret Matkal, Yitzhak Mordechai, a paratroopers battalion commander in the Battle of the Chinese Farm, Efi Eitam, who won the Medal of Distinguished Service (Itur Hamofet) on the Golan Heights in 1973, as did Zevulun Orlev for his part in defending the Suez Canal.
In addition, the Knesset will unveil an exhibit of 100 photos from Yom Kippur War soldiers’ personal albums.
