Police in Eilat arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of holding his mother hostage and threatening her with an ax on Monday in order to "cleanse" her of what the suspect said were haunting spirits.

The suspect told police that there were ghosts and demons in his house and he therefore decided to absolve his mother of the spirits.

After brief negotiations with authorities, the suspect provided police with the key to his house, allowing for a sweep of the residency.

Police located a knife in the pocket of the suspect. Authorities then ordered the man to undergo a psychological evaluation. Following the examination, the young man was hospitalized, Israeli media reported.
