The Tel Aviv District Court on Monday sentenced Sudanese migrant Gehad Omer to 10 1/2 years in prison for the rape and beating of a female Philippino guest worker.
Omer perpetrated the assault and rape on March 23 at 12:30 at night near Wolfson Street in Tel Aviv. He grabbed the woman (whose name cannot be revealed, under a gag order) from behind and punched her in the stomach.
Once she was immobilized, he dragged her to a parking lot at 80 Wolfson Street and threw her on the ground. Next, Omer sexually assaulted her all over her body.
The entire time, the woman tried to resist, crying out numerous times and once even grabbing a nearby rock and striking her assailant in the head.
In response, Omer beat the woman, damaging her left eye and other parts of her face. He then violently raped her while holding her hands down so she could not resist further.
The woman eventually passed out and awoke only later when the rapist had fled the area.
Omer cut a plea-bargain deal on June 19 and the court held a hearing regarding sentencing on August 25.
The state suggested the 10 1/2 year sentence eventually endorsed by the court in a plea bargain, as opposed to a harsher sentence, in order to save the woman from the trauma of having to testify.
