Amir Weintraub out in Montreal, Glushko dreaming of upset

Weintraub (206) is expected to climb in the rankings as he tries to build momentum ahead of US Open qualifiers.

After Amir Weintraub lost in his first-ever appearance in the main draw of an ATP Tour Masters event in Montreal on Monday, Julia Glushko made her debut in the WTA equivalent in Toronto early Wednesday morning, hoping to record the biggest win of her career.
Weintraub, ranked No. 206 in the world, impressively overcame Croatian giant Ivo Karlovic (88) 7-5, 7-6 in the final round of qualifying in Montreal after ousting Albert Ramos (73) in his previous match.
Despite his 6-1, 7-6 defeat to Pablo Andujar (52) in the first round of the main draw on Monday, Weintraub is still expected to climb in the rankings as he tries to build momentum ahead of the US Open qualifiers later this month.
Glushko (137) faced world No. 11 Samantha Stosur early Wednesday after defeating Gabriela Dabrowski 6-3, 6-4 in the final round of the qualifiers.
Shahar Pe’er (113) progressed to the second round of the Suzhou tournament in China on Tuesday, defeating Chang Liu (390) 6-3, 6-1.
Meanwhile in Montreal, Germany’s Florian Mayer sent Australian young gun Bernard Tomic tumbling out of the Rogers Cup, while Janko Tipsarevic’s miserable run of results continued with a first round exit.
Mayer, ranked 50th in the world, came from a set down to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 as the year’s sixth Masters series event began under blue skies and warm conditions.
Tomic has endured an inconsistent few months since the ATP banned his father and coach John for allegedly assaulting his practice partner in May.
He made a promising start on Monday, but Mayer capitalized on the Australian’s rising unforced error count at the start of the second set, and used his unorthodox backhand slice to great effect.
Mayer will face top seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic in the second round.
Tipsarevic’s hopes of rediscovering the form that took him to No. 8 in the world last year were shattered in the evening session when he was humbled by Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin 6-4, 6-3.
The 16th seed regularly held a top 10 spot during 2011-12 but has struggled for consistency this year, reaching the quarterfinals in just three of his last 15 tournaments.Reuters contributed to this report.
