January tourist arrivals up 16%

Some 134,000 foreign tourists arrived in Israel in January, representing an increase of 16 percent over the parallel month in 2005, the Central Bureau of Statistics said Wednesday.

Some 134,000 foreign tourists arrived in Israel in January, representing an increase of 16 percent over the parallel month in 2005, the Central Bureau of Statistics said Wednesday. Of the total, 110,000 came by air, up 15% from January last year, while 23,700 crossed the land borders showing a rise of 25%. Twice the number of foreign arrivals, or 4,900 passengers, flew direct to Eilat, and 200 visitors came to the country by sea. CBS also reported that January saw 184,000 Israelis leave the country, of which 85% were by air travel. Approximately 14,000 Israelis crossed the Taba border to go to Eilat this January, 95% more than last year.
