JPost Classic: 'A cold peace is better than warm war'

In clip from 1999, Egypt's then-ambassador to Israel Mohamed Bassiouny talks about the Israel-Egypt Peace Accords.

With events in Egypt casting concern over the future of Egypt-Israel relations, the term, “cold peace'' has re-emerged, in recent weeks, as diplomats and analysts alike characterize relations between the two nations.
In the following ''JPost Classic” Clip from 1999, recorded on the 20th anniversary of the Israel-Egypt Peace Accords, reporter Mordechai Twersky asked Egypt's Ambassador to Israel at the time, Mohamed Bassiouny, about his country's so-called “cold peace”' with Israel.
“A cold peace is better than warm war,” chuckled the Ambassador, who cited joint agreements in the area of agriculture and natural gas in the ''national interests'' of the two countries.  “I don't agree it is a cold peace.''
Bassiouny served from 1988-2001.
In 2008, in an interview with the Jerusalem Post, former Israeli Ambassador to the US, Danny Ayalon, accused Bassiouny of engaging in espionage activities against Israel during his tenure.
