President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, have received rabbinic approval to fly with the president on Shabbat to the Middle East and Europe, Politico reported.A White House official said the couple, who are Orthodox Jews, have received a rabbinical dispensation to join the president aboard Air Force One as he sets off on his first overseas trip on Friday, according to the report. The article named neither the official nor the rabbi, nor did it say who obtained the dispensation or when.Orthodox Jews observe a Sabbath prohibition on work, motorized travel and the switching on or off of any appliance that uses heat, electricity or fire. As a matter of consensus, the prohibitions do not apply to life-or-death situations or when violating the Shabbat has the potential of saving human lives (and according to some decisors, the lives of certain animals under specific circumstances).Trump has tasked Kushner with brokering a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.This is not the first time that the president's daughter and her husband are granted special rabbinical permission to break Shabbat. In January Trump and Kusher were authorized to travel by car on Friday evening following Trump's inauguration.Ivanka Trump has stressed in the past that her family leads a religious lifestyle and that the observation of Shabbat was an essential part of that tradition. "We observe the Sabbath. From Friday to Saturday we don't do anything but hang out with one another. We don't make phone calls," she told Vogue in March 2015. The New York Times reported Thursday that as part of his effort to secure an arms deal worth about $110 billion with Saudi Arabia, Kushner called the CEO of defense contractor Lockheed Martin directly and asked her to reduce the cost of a missile defense system so that Saudi Arabia could buy it.On the presidential visit, Trump and his delegation are scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia, Israel, Italy and Belgium. Trump is scheduled to land in Israel on Monday.
