White House National Adviser John Bolton said in an interview broadcast on Sunday that withdrawal from the Iran nuclear accord is "under consideration", but that the final decision would be up to President Donald Trump.
In the interview, Bolton said withdrawal was only one of several possibilities. Bolton has advocated taking a hard line on Iran, but told "Face the Nation" on CBS News that those were his personal views and were not necessarily the position of the administration.
His comments come as new Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was in the Middle East holding separate meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Saudi King Salman.
Pompeo told reporters Washington is deeply concerned by Iran's "destabilizing and malign activities and stressed the need for unity among Gulf allies as Washington aims to muster support for new sanctions against Iran."
During a visit to Washington in April, French President Emmanuel Macron had urged the US to stay in the accord.
