Customarily lurking backstage, Israel’s designers have now designed their own association, called AMBI, the Hebrew acronym for the Israel Association of Stage Designers, and designated Ruth Dar as the inaugural recipient of the Arye Navon Prize for stage design, to be awarded annually.Dar received the prize for life achievement. She has designed sets and costumes for theater, opera, stage and TV – more than 200 to date – and is still going strong. Her clean lines and spatial eloquence have influenced local stage design over the years. The ceremony was held at AMBI’s first conference, which took place last week with the aim of keeping local designers at the cutting edge.
