Oded Kottler has started rehearsals on Harper Regan, a play by UK playwright Simon Stephens that was commissioned for and premiered at the National Theater in 2008. Liora Rivlin will play the title role, and Dov Glikman, her ineffectual husband Seth. Refused leave by her employer to visit her sick father, Harper takes off anyway - but he dies before she gets there. Something snaps in her, and for two days she disappears from her staid existence, looking for something. As well as her dour mother, she meets some very strange people, an anti-Semitic journalist (whom she attacks), a naïve hospital assistant and a handsome black boy, among the rest. Her family is frantic. When she finally returns home, she has found an answer of sorts. It's not perfect, but then what is? Stephens (b. 1971) has written eight plays and is viewed increasingly as one of the UK's major playwrights. Harper Regan opens here in September.
