Paul Taylor, who is still creating dance at 80 years old, is sending the Paul Taylor Company to Israel with Changes (2008), Piazzolla Caldera (1997) and Promethean Fire (2002). Set to music by The Mamas and the Papas, Changes evokes the roistering and buoyant 1960s, Piazzolla Caldera is a tribute to Argentinian tango wizard Astor Piazzolla and Fire, set to music by Bach, was called by one critic “the American dance of the millennium.”Martha Graham, José Limon and Merce Cunningham, each a great pioneer of American dance, are gone. Only Taylor is left. A virtuoso dancer himself, he was a principal in Graham’s company for seven seasons, even though he had started his own company in 1954. While dancing with Graham and the New York City Ballet, he made dance and performed with his own company.Taylor does not shun social issues – war, incest, imperialism,fanaticism – but he never preaches, and his work also includes “themost purely romantic, most astonishingly athletic, and downrightfunniest dances ever put on stage,” as his Website puts it.ThePaul Taylor Company will be at the Tel Aviv performing Arts Center May1-4, at the Petah Tikva Auditorium on April 27, at the auditorium inHaifa (April 28) and the Jerusalem Theater (April 29). Tickets willprobably be scarce as hens’ teeth, so be advised.
