Pope Benedict XVI is publishing a children's book, titled "Gli Amici di Gesu" (The Friends of Jesus), the Vatican press announced. The book contains descriptions of Jesus' relationship with his "first companions," and is taken from the Pope's catecheses over the past five years. The 48-page book, to be published in Italian, includes painted depictions of Jesus' 14 "friends" - the 12 apostles, Matthias and St. Paul.Milanese publishing house Piccola Casa Editrice describes the book as a "route that takes the reader to the origins of the Church, through the events of the first people who found Jesus and became his friends."Vatican press said that the publisher thought the Pope should write a children's book after noticing that references to the apostles during his catecheses were also directed to children.English and Spanish versions are expected to be published in 2011.
