The Habima National Theater and the Cameri Theater of Tel Aviv have joined forces for a new production of Antigone that went into rehearsals last week. Part of Sophocles's Theban Trilogy, Antigone tells the story of the title character, the daughter of Oedipus, and her fight to bury her brother Polyneices against the orders of her uncle, Creon, the new king of Thebes. Director Chanan Snir says that although the play was written some 2,000 years ago, its themes are still relevant, commenting that the conflict "between custom and tradition has been a part of human history since the first civilizations." Antigone's first performance is scheduled for December 30 at the Cameri.
