Riding the Wave, an Ashdod arts festival celebrating the beachside city's 50th anniversary, kicks off tonight at Ashdod's Monart Center. The 3-day festival focuses in particular on art contributed to the city by "waves" of immigrant groups arriving in Israel since the founding of modern Ashdod. Stage actress Rama Messinger will host a performance of the Ashdod Symphonic Orchestra as part of the festival's opening event, with the celebration to be capped off Saturday evening with a singing contest. Artwork and performances by immigrants from Russia, France, South America, Ethiopia and India will also be highlighted during the festival.
