The eighth annual Cinema South festival will open on Sunday at the Sderot Cinematheque with a gala pre-debut of The Loners, a film by Renen Schorr about lone soldiers who fall by the wayside. President Shimon Peres and Deputy Prime Minister Silvan Shalom will be in attendance. The festival will feature Israeli films, as well as sections on Africa, Mexico and student films.
Also playing during the festival are Ajami, by Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani, about the neighborhood of the same name in Jaffa - straight from Cannes; and Closure, by Anat Even, about her older brother's death. Mexican director Carlos Reygadas will attend and focus the spotlight on his controversial work with screenings of his films Japan, Battle in Heaven and Silent Light. Other guests include Belgian filmmaker Thierry Michel and Cameroon's Osvalde Lewat-Hallade.
Awards will given out in the categories of Israeli cinema, Southern filmmaker and Graduate films.
A gala pre-debut of Zion and His Brother, about brothers who cause a horrible accident, by Eran Merav, will close the festival on June 11. Entrance to all screenings is free. More information is available at http://csf.sapir.ac.il.
