Israelis up for European film awards

Waltz with Bashir, an animated documentary about the first Lebanon War, received a nomination for Best European Film of the Year.

Ari Folman's Waltz with Bashir, an animated documentary about the first Lebanon War, received a European Film Academy nomination for Best European Film of the Year, a category that has included Middle Eastern movies for several years. Folman was nominated for Best Director and Best Screenwriter, and Max Richter, who composed the film's score, was nominated for Best Composer. In addition, Israeli Arab actress Hiam Abbass received a nomination for Best Actress for her performance in Eran Riklis's Lemon Tree. Lemon Tree also received a nomination for its screenwriters, Riklis and Suha Arraf. The 1,800 members of the European Film Academy will vote on the awards, which will be presented on December 6 in Copenhagen. Last year, Israeli actor Sasson Gabbai won the Best Actor prize at the European Film Awards for his performance in The Band's Visit.
