By JERUSALEM POST STAFF'Shadia' wins Israel documentary awards
Awards for Israeli documentaries, sponsored by the Forum of Documentary Filmmakers and the Second Broadcasting Authority for Television and Radio, were announced at a ceremony in Ramat Gan on Monday. Shadia, a film about a teenage Arab girl who is a karate champion, by Roy Westler, won two important prizes, for Best Television Documentary and the Next Generation Award, which carry cash prizes of NIS 700,000 and NIS 45,000, respectively.
The award for Best Feature Documentary went to Stormy Waters, a film by Gil Karni about a family of Arab fishermen in the Gaza Strip and their contact with Jews, which was accompanied by an award of NIS 290,000. Two films were awarded prizes for Best Television Series: Haim Yavin's controversial Land of the Settlers and Bridge Over the Wadi, Barak and Tomer Heymann's look at a Jewish-Arab school. Yavin also won the directing award from Mifal HaPayis. David Gavro's Sisai, a look at his adopted brother, took the prize for Best Debut Film. Sisai received the Wolgin Award for Best Documentary at the Jerusalem Film Festival last summer. Anat Even's Places won the award for Best Short. - Hannah BrownA Latino letdown?
Ricky Martin fans (if they're out there) could be disappointed by the recent reports which indicate that the Puerto Rican singer might cancel his planned June 3rd show. According to the Hebrew press, just 300 tickets have been sold to Martin's scheduled Rishon Lezion Amphitheater performance. Other reports claim that the "Livin' la vida loca" star is merely switching venues to the Ra'anana Amphitheater. Should Martin cancel, he will be the second singer this year after Kelly Clarkson to pull out of a high profile show after tickets already went on sale. - Viva Sarah Press
