Less than two weeks after 84 of Hollywood's most powerful figures signed a petition supporting Israel's fight against Hizbullah, British filmmaker Ken Loach has joined the Palestinian campaign calling for a boycott of Israeli cultural institutions.
"Palestinians are driven to call for this boycott after 40 years of the occupation of their land, destruction of their homes and the kidnapping and murder of their civilians," Loach said in a statement. "As British citizens we have to acknowledge our own responsibility. We must condemn the British and U.S. governments for supporting and arming Israel."
The acclaimed director of films including The Navigators and Carla's Song, Loach won a Palme d'Or earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival for The Wind Shakes the Barley, a drama about the fight for Irish independence. The 70-year-old director said he would decline an invitation he received several weeks ago to appear at October's Haifa International Film Festival.
Well-known for his leftist politics, Loach also criticized Israel's closest allies in the statement. "We must also oppose the terrorist activities of the British and US governments in pursuing their illegal wars and occupations," he said. - Nathan BursteinHitler paintings to be auctioned in UK
Twenty-one watercolors and sketches attributed to Adolf Hitler will be sold by a British auction house on Sept. 26, officials said Friday.
The drawings were made when Hitler was a soldier serving in Flanders during World War I, said Ian Morris, auctioneer at Jefferys Auctioneers in Cornwall in southwest England.
The images, mostly pallid landscapes, are not well-regarded on artistic grounds, but auctioneers say some could sell for up to $8,000.
"They were painted in [Hitler's] formative years before he became political," Morris told the BBC, "so you could look at the pictures and see the psychology inside the man's head, rather than what he became."
Holocaust survivor Ellen Davis said the sale was an attempt to remember Hitler as an artist rather than "as a monster. He was not an artist."

The free show kicks off at 9 p.m. at Tel Aviv's Hangar 11, with a line-up scheduled to include rapper Shai 360 and Mizrahi pop artist Idan Yaniv, who's currently dominating singles charts with summer mega-hit "Hoshev Aleha."
