The Egyptian-born terrorist implicated in the assassination of Rabbi Meir Kahane confesses to killing the radical US-born cleric in a new TV documentary scheduled to air Saturday evening on Channel 2.
El Sayyid Nosair, who was acquitted of murder but sent to prison on weapons charges following Kahane's death, admits to assassinating the rabbi in the new Israeli-produced film, which reviews the aftermath of the murder and examines Nosair's writings about the case. In his writings, Nosair describes his preparations for the killing, which took place in front of dozens of eyewitnesses following a speech by Kahane in November 1990. Nosair also expresses remorse for the murder, saying "the world has only gotten worse and more radical" in the years since Kahane's death.
The Brooklyn-born Kahane became a target for Islamic extremists with his calls to expel Arabs from Israel and the Palestinian territories. An immigrant to Israel in 1971, he was twice elected to the Knesset but was later barred from office according to an anti-racism law passed in 1985. Works by more than 50 artists from the Galilee went on display Monday at the Givatayim Theater, with the exhibit scheduled to travel to New York City's Hebrew Union College Gallery next month. The works, some of which were created in northern bomb shelters during fighting with Lebanon, will be sold in New York, with proceeds going to aid northern Israel's arts community. Israeli artists of Arab, Jewish, Druse and other backgrounds contributed works to the exhibition, which organizers hope to duplicate in other US and European cities. - JP Staff
