Paul Thomas Anderson’s film The Master stars Joaquin Phoenix as a psychologically damaged war veteran who finds himself working for Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a charismatic figure who is building his own religion. Also starring Amy Adams and Laura Dern.

2. NORWEGIAN FILM WEEK
Norwegian cinema has not only had local success but has also triumphed in the international arena, receiving praise from critics, film festivals and commercial distributors.
Norwegian Film Week will showcase new works by some of the most prominent filmmakers of Nor-Wave (the Norwegian New Wave). Films include Joachim Trier’s Oslo, August 31st. The program offers a variety of subjects and provides a broad representation of Norwegian culture.

Tmuna, the experimental Tel Aviv fringe theater company, is celebrating a year of its festivals with a medley of events at the Tmuna Festival from today until next Thursday.
On October 26 and 27, the theater will host the Montefiore Music Festival, which will showcase the latest in avant-garde music. In addition to dance pieces from AGenre and IntimaDance, there will be three premieres and a piece from Berlin. There will also be music at the Tmuna bar nightly from 10 during the festival, with such entertainers as Dikla and Dana Vishinski.

4. TRA LA LA
As far as operas go, they don’t get much bigger or better than Verdi’s La Traviata.
When taking on this massive masterpiece, Argentinean choreographer Inaki Urlezaga strove to keep origin and authenticity in mind with every step. His ballet rendition of the opera will take the stage at the Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center this month as part of the 2012-13 dance season.

5. HIGH-BROW ENTERTAINMENT
Alma Zohar, the stepdaughter of musician Ya’acov Rotblit, shifts among world beats, rock, pop, soul, reggae, jazz and country elements in her music.
She uses high-level Hebrew in her lyrics, as well as a smattering of words from the Bible. Catch this talented musician as she performs songs from her two albums. Between songs, Zohar will talk about her work, the musical influence of her stepfather, and her mother’s death.

6. THIRD TIME’S THE CHARM
Next week, famed dancer and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov will pay his third visit to Israel. In an exhibition at the Suzanne Dellal Center entitled “Dance My Way,” Baryshnikov’s photos of numerous international artists will be on display for several days.
Throughout the course of his long career in the limelight, he has collaborated with celebrated dance artists from a wide range of movement genres. In recent years, he has been known to arrive at the studio with a camera in tow. 7. ANNA’S VIENNA
Born in Brno, Moravia, in 1894, Anna Ticho lived and studied art in Vienna until 1912, when she immigrated to Palestine. “Anna’s Vienna” explores the visual and material culture to which Ticho was exposed during this impressionable time in her life. On view are works by Anna Ticho herself, as well as artwork by Joseph Hoffman, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Michael Thonet.

8. STEP INSIDE
Houses from Within is a three-day architecture fest in Jerusalem, offering a broad range of constructed delights. Taking place all around the capital next weekend, visitors can indulge their voyeuristic tendencies with access to private apartments, urban villas, synagogues, churches and public structures. All will open their doors – free of charge – to give visitors a glimpse of the city’s various designs and architectural history.
