Israeli films continue their unprecedented wave of success this year - Raphael Nadjari's Tehilim won the grand prize at the Tokyo Filmex Festival on Sunday.
Nadjari, a French director married to Israeli actress Sarah Adler, made Tehilim in Jerusalem, with an all-Israeli, Hebrew-speaking cast. The film tells the story of an Orthodox family thrown into turmoil when the father disappears suddenly. It was included in the main competition at Cannes this year.
Nadjari will receive a prize of one million yen (about $9,260). His last film, Stones, also made in Israel, was nominated for a European Film Academy Award. Eran Kolirin's The Band's Visit won the top prize at the Tokyo International Film Festival last month, and Israeli films have also taken major awards at Sundance, Berlin, Cannes and Tribeca this year.
