The Israeli-French film The Band's Visit was awarded on Sunday with the Skira Grand Prix, the prize for best film, at this year's Tokyo International Film Festival. "It's a great honor for us," said director Eran Kolirin, who came onstage to receive the $50,000 prize.
The film, which won the Ophir award for best picture in Israel last month, tells of the fictitious visit of an Egyptian orchestra to Israel, whose members end up spending the night in a small Jewish town in the Negev. Band was recently disqualified by the Academy Awards Committee from the "best foreign film" category, as the majority of the dialogue in the film is in English.
