Hungary’s MAV Orchestra, soloists and a 120 member international choir will perform Verdi’s great Requiem on May 9 at Orient Hall in the Railway Museum of Budapest, commemorating the 65th anniversary of the end of WWII, and the many, many thousands of Jews who died in and were sent to their deaths from Terezin, Czechoslovakia, better known as Hitler’s show camp, Theresienstadt.Actually, Defiant Requiem – Verdi at Terezin, by noted US educator/conductor Murry Sidlin, also commemorates the 16 times that Verdi’s masterpiece was performed at the Theresienstadt between 1943 and 1944. Rafael Schechter, the conductor, and most of the performers were gassed at Auschwitz, often taken to the trains during rehearsals. Sidlin created a multimedia piece with the music, interviews with some of the surviving singers, other texts, and a movie that has been performed in the US and at Terezin itself.The Federation of the Jewish Community of Hungary together with theTourism and Cultural Center of the Budapest Jewish Community aresponsoring the concert.
